Organising

I have an organised (some, like my wife, say over-organised) way of doing things. I wouldn't say I offer an Organising service - we're not talking "Clutter Busters 'R Us" here - but whatever I do for you will be done in a generally organized fashion.

Organising is one of the things that a good manager does naturally, whether it's organising the staff and what they do, organising the furniture, the filing cabinets, or the data structure, or icons on a desktop computer.

If you don't know where to start on a project, or a mess, or a problem, I can help you sort it out. If it's something you will be doing over and over, I can document it and produce task lists, checklists and photos so that next time everyone knows what to do.

There was a time when each time a branch office moved to a different location, it was a whole new project. Sometimes people got involved who had done it before, and it went fairly well, sometimes it was a mess. As IT Manager, I often had to clean up part of the mess. ("We moved to a new office yesterday, why don't our computers work today?" was my least favourite question.) I put together a guide that included things like notifying the telecom company six weeks before the move, and transferring the insurance. I made sure the guide was easy to access, and at the first hint of an impending move, I made sure the branch manager had seen the guide. Each time we did a move, the guide was updated and became more useful.

So where do you need some organisation in your business?

Software Tools Visio, Word, Outlook, Excel - whatever makes most sense!
Technologies used database, lists, flow charts, decision tables, charting, sorting, prioritising, scheduling
Specialties Breaking an impossible mess down to do-able tasks
Locality Typically, I communicate via email, and occasionally phone. Organising is probably better done with face to face contact, and for that, you'd need to be in Oakville or possibly Burlington or Milton. I tried commuting once, and didn't like it.
